Owing
to the economic distress resulting from the
industrial revolution, large numbers of Europeans were forced to/were made
to/ were compelled to leave their homelands in order to seek freedom
and security in the US, where they looked forward to settling down and
starting from scratch, despite all the hardships they had to go through.
However
difficult it may have been and despite all the
obstacles they had to overcome before reaching the promised land where they
looked forward to starting anew, large numbers of European emigrants, urged
/ spurred on / driven on by harsh economic conditions or religious
conflicts, didn’t hesitate to uproot themselves and emigrat
to the US, a country they considered to be a promised land, a land of
opportunities.
