a-       The video is a news broadcast dealing with the issue of Chinese merchandise. Millions of Chinese-made toys were recently pulled off American shelves because the paint on them contained too much lead. Lead can be very unhealthy if swallowed and can lead to many diseases. However Chinese consumers are not worried. The woman interviewed in the video feels confidant her child is old enough not to put the toy in his mouth. However, this not the only recent problem with Chinese products.

b-      Child labour can be accounted for because the cost of production in poor countries is very small. Western businessmen have items made in third world countries because people there work for peanuts. Child labour is common because children work for even less than adults, and all the employers care about is making money.

c-       Dear sister,

I hope you are well. IÕm sending some money back to you with this letter. It isnÕt much, because we donÕt get paid a lot. There are a lot of other children working in the factory. Most of them are less than twelve years old. We all sleep together in a small room. ItÕs very cramped, but we manage.

My job is to carry the boxes of finished toys from the storeroom to the loading area. It is hard work but it isnÕt the worst job in the factory ( some of the children working in the production area have lost their hands ).

The food isnÕt very good, but at least we are fed. They say that in some of the other factories the children do not get anything to eat.

I was very happy to get your last letter. IÕm glad mum is alright and I hope dad gets better. DonÕt forget to write and tell me how the harvest goes.

I miss you all very much, and I hope to hear from you soon,

Love Chang.
