The first immigrants to the territory now constituting the United States were from Western Europe. The first great influx began early in the 19th century when large numbers of Europeans left their homelands to escape the economic distress resulting from the industrial revolution .Later on, in the 20th century, wars, political oppression, and religious persecution caused a great many Europeans to seek freedom and security in the U.S, a country they looked up to as a promised land, a land of opportunities where they were looking forward to settling and starting anew. But starting from scratch was not so easy ! Whole families were uprooted and had to go through such terrible hardships as the crossing of the Atlantic on rough seas, xenophobia or racialism, not to mention all the obstacles they had to overcome before being granted citizenship. However, for all of them, reaching America was a dream come true.
